About the image

The photo was taken at dawn off Corsica, after a long night of tacking into an East wind.

It reminds me of many such night voyages with an uncertain outcome, for example in the Hebrides, the Kattegat, the Cyclades or in the Bass Strait. Even with the best buoys and beacons, the sea at night can hold nasty surprises like half-sunken (and of course unmarked) containers, such as in the Bass Strait (often) or in early 2019 off the West Frisian islands.

For me, the picture expresses the great relief that comes after uncertainties have been overcome: One less worry.
